Three months with a gel battery in my caravan, my honest thoughts - bramelliott - 13.10.2026 I wanted to share how things went since I switched, because when I was deciding I couldn't find many real stories, only shop talk. We have a small caravan that we take to the coast in Fujairah most winter weekends. The old battery kept dying after one night, and it was always a problem when the fridge stopped working at 3am. A friend told me to try a gel battery, but I didn't understand why it would be any different. So before buying I read a page called How a Varta gel battery works, explained simply, and it helped me understand that the liquid inside is set like jelly, so it does not spill and it is made for slow, steady use instead of one big burst. I bought one the same week, and honestly the first two trips were a big change. The fridge ran all night, the lights stayed bright, and I stopped checking the battery every hour like a worried parent. I also like that I don't need to open it and top up water. Now for the not so perfect part. It was much more expensive than my old one, and it is heavy, so my back complained when I carried it into the van. Last month we had a very hot weekend, and I noticed the case felt quite warm, so I started parking in the shade and it felt better. I also learned the hard way that you cannot use any old charger. My first try with the one I already had gave me a strange result, and the battery did not reach full charge, so I borrowed a proper one from a neighbor. So here are my questions for people who have used these longer than me. How many years did yours last before you saw a drop in power? Is a warm case normal in summer, or should I worry? So, is it okay to leave it connected to a small solar panel all week while the van is parked? I am thinking of adding one. If you have a good charger or panel you trust, please tell me what you use and what it costs. And if you ever regretted switching to gel, I would like to hear that too, so I know what to watch for. |
