BMW jerks when shifting from reverse to drive, is this a big problem? - bramelliott - 21.10.2026

My BMW X1 now has this habit of jerking when I shift from reverse into drive, especially when the car is cold in the morning. It's a hard thump that I can feel through the whole car. Once I drive for a few minutes it stops doing it, or at least it becomes much softer. I asked my neighbor who knows cars and he said it could be the gearbox mount or the oil is old. Another person told me it might be the transmission itself starting to fail, which honestly made me lose sleep. I have not taken it anywhere yet because I wanted to hear from people first. I found https://gearboxrepairsharjah.ae/brands/bmw while searching for answers and it covers BMW gearbox repair in Sharjah. What I want to know is simple. Has anyone had this same thump when shifting from reverse to drive? What was the actual cause in your case? Did a simple fix like oil change or mounts solve it, or was it something deeper? And is it safe to keep driving while I figure this out? The car only has 70,000 km so I am hoping it is not something major. Any honest experience would really help me.
