I just got my 2015 Audi A4 back from its annual check, and now I am more confused than when I dropped it off. The first mechanic, an older guy near my office, told me the gearbox fluid should be changed every 40,000 km without question. Then I mentioned it to the dealer advisor on the phone, and she said the manual calls it a long life fluid and that I can leave it alone for a very long time. My car has about 67,000 km and has never had the fluid changed, so I am sitting right in the middle of both answers. My brother in law says the dealer is only repeating the factory line, because the factory does not care what happens to the car after the warranty ends. My friend Ismail says the old mechanic just wants extra work. I understand why both could be partly right, but that doesn't help me decide. Last night I spent an hour reading and came across some reliable advice on how often to change Audi transmission fluid, and it said heat and driving style can change the answer a lot, which made sense since our summers are brutal and I do plenty of stop and go. Still, one page is one page. So here is what I would like to know from real owners. What interval do you follow, and what makes you choose it? Did you change the fluid early on a car with no problems, and did you notice anything different afterwards, or was it just peace of mind? So, is it true that waiting too long can make the first change riskier, because the old fluid is so worn that fresh fluid stirs up trouble? A friend told me that once and I have no idea if it is real. And what does a proper change cost roughly, so I know when a quote is fair? I honestly would really love to hear experiences, even if the answer is that I am overthinking it.
